? Astronaut Life — What Do Spacewalks and Training Really Look Like?

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live and work in space like a real astronaut? ?‍?? From the hard training on Earth to the amazing spacewalks above our planet, astronauts go through a life full of challenges and excitement!

Let’s explore what their life is like — especially how they train and what a spacewalk really involves!

?‍? Astronaut Training — Getting Ready for Space

Becoming an astronaut isn’t easy — it takes years of training before any mission! Astronauts learn how to:

  • Fly and operate spacecraft systems
  • Understand life support and safety rules
  • Do science experiments in microgravity
  • Work as a team and stay calm in emergencies
  • Learn new languages like Russian (important for the International Space Station)

This training happens at special centers like NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Texas. There, astronauts train in simulators that mimic space conditions, practice emergency procedures, and even prepare for living in a weightless environment.

Some astronauts also train in unique environments — like exploring caves deep underground — to learn teamwork, problem-solving, and how to live in harsh places, much like space missions!

? Training for Spacewalks — Practice Underwater

One of the hardest parts of being an astronaut is doing a spacewalk, also called an Extravehicular Activity (EVA) — that means going outside the spacecraft into the vacuum of space!

But how do astronauts prepare for that?

The best place to practice “floating” like in space… is underwater! ?

Astronauts wear their heavy spacesuits and train in huge swimming pools like NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL), where they practice repairing equipment and moving in a weightless-like environment underwater. They often spend many hours underwater preparing for the hours they’ll spend outside in space!

Underwater trainers and safety divers help them move around and guide their tasks. This training can last up to six hours in a single session!

?‍? What Is a Spacewalk?

A spacewalk is when an astronaut leaves the safety of their spacecraft — like the International Space Station — to work in the vacuum of space! ?

During a spacewalk, astronauts:

? Fix or upgrade parts of the station
? Install or repair tools and instruments
? Set up scientific experiments
? Practice techniques for future missions

Spacewalks are long — sometimes lasting 5 to 8 hours or more — and astronauts must wear powerful spacesuits that keep them safe from extreme temperatures and lack of air.

? Life on the Space Station

When they’re not training or spacewalking, astronauts also live and work inside the space station. Up there, they:

  • Sleep in special sleeping bags stuck to walls
  • Eat foods specially prepared for space
  • Exercise every day to stay healthy
  • Do science experiments that can’t be done on Earth

Astronauts even see 16 sunrises and sunsets every day as the station orbits Earth! ??

? Think About This…

Astronaut life is a mix of:
? Hard training on Earth
? Teamwork and skill
? Incredible experiences in space

From practicing underwater to walking outside their spacecraft, astronauts train like heroes so they can explore beyond our planet!
